METROPOLITAN COUNCIL

Organization

The Council is a body or community of people, which meet to make decisions about issues within their competency. The origin of the name is from the Latin word capitulum (chapter). In the specific case of the ecclesiastic council, it is a group of clergymen in charge of the management of a Cathedral church, whose functions are liturgical, although other tasks assigned by the ecclesiastic law or the Bishop can be carried out.

The structure of an ecclesiastical Council may vary, but in essence and traditionally it is made up as follows: Five dignitaries, who are the deán (president), who presides the Council and is in charge of the holy office; the arcediano (supervisor), who evaluates clergymen to be ordained and eventually visits the diocese; the chantre (choir master), who sings and teaches singing to the choir; the maestre escuela (school teacher), who teaches Latin grammar; and the tesorero (treasurer), who manages the Cathedral's finances.

Following are ten "canonjías" clergymen: four from the opposition or specialties (doctoral, magisterial, theological and penitentiary) and six of pardon or mercy. The dignitaries and clergymen are only for presbyteries, while the deacons may aspire to the six rations and the sub-deacons to the six half-rations, which may later include chaplains and other functions.

The members of the present Lima Metropolitan Council (2007) are the following:
