THE LIMA BASILICA CATHEDRAL RELIGIOUS ART MUSEUM

The Lima Basilica Cathedral Religious Art Museum is an institution managed by the Metropolitan "Council" (Council) that is dedicated to the exhibition of the Cathedral's art and historical heritage. The Museum was set up on 25 July 1974 under the management of Museos Turísticos S.A. (MUTURSA).

The Museum closed its doors in January 1981, to reopen them on 30 August 1984 thanks to a donation from Foptur. Since then, its management has been overseen band the Metropolitan Council.

Since its reopening, the Museum has also had the decisive support of the Lima Assistant Bishop, Mons. Alberto Brazzini Díaz-Ufano (1937 - 2001). Presently, the richness of its heritage makes the Cathedral Museum one of the most visited in Lima.

ON DISPLAY

The Museum exhibits the Cathedral's own works of art to and pieces from private collectors, such as Waldemar and Matilde Shroder Mendoza, benefactors of the church in Lima. Thanks to it, the public can today appreciate valuable sculptures, paintings and ornaments.

The Museum's layout is distributed amongst premises belonging to the Lima Cathedral since XVII, adding an historical value to the tour. Taking this into consideration, the "Antesacristía" (sacristy entrance) is worthy of mention, exhibiting the collection of 12 paintings of the Bassano family; the old main Sacristy, which contains the "gran cajonería" (great collection of drawers) and the chapter hall (meeting place of the Council) where the famous gallery of bishops can be seen.

The tour includes, in addition to the Museum and its halls, a complete visit of the Cathedral, during which one can appreciate the tomb of Francisco Pizarro, the lateral "capillas" (chapels), the spectacular seating of the choir (one of the most famous in Latin America), amongst other attractions, providing the visitor with an integral concept of the history and art of the Lima Cathedral.
